Hi, I'm Don Klover with the Gary Jet Center. We have an old SCOUT that has been sitting here in our hangar for a long time. It has recently been purchased and is in need of an annual. None of us here have any experience with fabric covered aircraft. My question is what is the best, quickest FAA approved way to test the fabric to be compliant for the annual sign off. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The fabric is not normally tested during Annual. As far as I know the only FAA approved method is to remove a strip of fabric, remove the paint or dope and do a pull test. There is a fabric testing tool called a Maul tester which could be used but is not technically approved, but is commonly used if there is doubt as to the integrity of the fabric. The Maul tester does not require removing a piece of fabric.
